Virginia City, Nevada is the location of the Comstock Lode which yielded $400,000,000 in gold and silver between 1859 and 1880. Gold Hill was about a mile south of Virginia City. The author's father, Isaac L. Requa, was a mill superintendent in this area for many years in the 1860s and 1870s. Isaac L. Requa, mining engineer, came to California in 1850 from Tarrytown, N.Y. He engaged in mining in California until 1860, when he moved to Virginia City, Nevada, and became superintendent of the Chollar-Potosi Mining Company, the Hale and Norcross Mines, and the Union Mill and Mining Company.
